External Sounds are more than a little excited to have the legendary Rebel Dread himself Mr DON LETTS at The Purple Room on Saturday 5th of May as part of The Drogheda Arts Festival 2012.

Don Letts has been at the cultural cutting edge of music and film since the 1970's. His dj residency at the infamous London Punk club 'The Roxy', is widely acknowledged as the catalyst for the merging of Punk and Dub Reggae genres that came to prominence in the music of bands such as The Clash & PIL. Bob Marley, who was living in London at the time, recognised these developments with his 1977 song Punky Reggae Party.

Along with ex Clash guitarist Mick Jones, he formed 'Big Audio Dynamite' in 1984. They quickly established themselves as an innovative group with their signature sound incorporating Reggae, Hip-Hop, Punk Rock, Funk and Dance Music. He went on to perform and co-write four albums with B.A.D. achieving several hits on both sides of the Atlantic including the top ten hit E=Mc2.

During this period he also became revered as a film maker. His first movie, 'The Punk Rock Movie' documented the emerging music scene during this time. His fly on the wall footage of The Clash was later made into 'Westway To The World’, which won him a Grammy in 2003. He has produced dozens of films and documentaries on various music movements, with artists such as Gil Scott Heron, Sun Ra, Franz Ferdinand, and The Jam, to name but a few.
As well as his film work he continues to push musical boundaries through his weekly radio show 'Culture Clash' on BBC Radio 6.
